All this forms the background for the present book link to David Bruce Hegeman’s Plowing in Hope: Toward a Biblical Theology of Culture (Moscow, ID: Canon Press, 1999). Beating swords into plowshares connotes a time of peace (for which we can hope), the preaching of the word, and perhaps the apocalyptic plowing under of the old order so that the seed spread by the word of God can come forth. In Hegeman’s book, however, plowing is a metaphor for what humans do with the raw resources of creation to make it into a habitable culture. It is what humans do in response to the cultural mandate (Gen. 1:28).
